Day 3
OMG- Josh Potter- Some students are now attempting jumps but not many are being landed. There is photo evidence of Josh doing a jump and getting air time which was landed with grace. Well done!
Wipeout- Jack De'Courcy- Jack had his first day up the mountain which is always difficult. He managed to fall off the ski lift and take out most of his group on the way down, including Miss Bedney and Tomas the instructor.
All The Gear No Idea- Katie somehow managed to mangle her ski poles in the chair lift whilst getting off, her poles came out at right angles and subsequently broke in two. See previous post.

Ski Update

By Wednesday, all groups (including the beginners) were skiing up on the mountain. This was their chance to apply the skills they had practiced on the nursery slopes and apply them on a blue run. The group did exceptionally well however there were a few ups and downs along the way....

Mrs Banwait didn't quite make it off the chair lift. She also took out a few students in the process.

 

 

Katie managed to mangle her ski poles around the chair lift as she got off. As you can see the poles didn't quite look the same afterwards - in fact they broke in two after this picture was taken.

Finally, the whole group was ready to tackle the blue run.

At the Hotel

Everyday, students were treated to a continental breakfast, a hot soup for lunch and a 3 course meal in the evening which normally consisted of Austrian sausage/schnitzel and chips. Students always sat together at meal times as you can see in the photo below.

 

Mmm, another bowl of soup....You can see the excitement in Janek's face!

 

Evening activities in the hotel mainly consisted of cards - or should I say Mafia. True characters came out during this game. Students learnt 3 key things:

 

1. NEVER play Mafia with Mr Tubb

2. NEVER believe Mrs Banwait

3. ALWAYS listen to Miss Bedney!!

Awards

Skiing Awards
After each day of skiing, 3 awards were presented and the jackets had to be worn on the slopes the next day:
OMG Award- if somebody did something amazing
Wipeout Award- for the most spectacular fall of the day
All The Gear No Idea- for somebody who is not as good as they proclaim

Day 1
OMG- Joe Smith- for demonstrating excellent skill, speed and control on day 1, very impressive!
Wipeout- Muz Shaikh- Muz had numerous falls, most of which resulted in his skis coming off. He also took out most of his group who were waiting for him at the bottom of the run- dominoes spring to mind!
All The Gear No Idea- Mrs Banwait- Miss looked great in her matching jacket, salopettes and goggles, however when we went for the ski fit she had her socks on back to front. Also when asked by the instructor if she had skied before her reply was 'no but I'm good!'

 

 

Day 2
OMG- Elliot Bailey- Elliot is new to skiing so is trying to master going forwards, however he managed to ski backwards - without falling over - all the way down the slope with a look of horror on his face. A skill the advanced group would have been proud of.
Wipeout- Tom Goodwin- Miss Bedney managed to capture one of his falls on video as he tried to land a 180 jump which would have been very impressive. In the afternoon, his fall at the top of a black run was also very memorable.
All The Gear No Idea- Ed Watts- if you were to talk to Ed at the beginning of the week, he would have told you that he should be in the advanced group. However he had still yet to master turning to the right and in some cases stopping.

 



Bowling Night

Ice skating got turned to bowling due to the lack of ice and it was a game that Miss Bedney was confident she was 'sick' at. Surprisingly this wasn't the case as with her first go she only got 3! The 7 o'clock switch on Henry was turned on which sent him into bowling oblivion. Unfortunately he wasn't quite good enough when under the pressure of the Final between his team and the staff team. In fact there is photo evidence that Henry had the lowest score out of both teams in this game- even Mrs Banwait beat him! Not surprisingly, the staff were the Winners!

Students who had some experience in skiing had to show the instructors their skills to determine which group they were to go in. I think there were still a few nerves flying around!!

Team AUEA- first day

Day 1 evening

Once students had got over the surprise/shock of seeing the AUEA/Modling Work Experience students and Mr McIvor at lunchtime, we arranged an evening of fun and games. The main event being an indoor football tournament at Jufa Sports Hotel. The teams were AUEA, Team Modling and Chingford (the London school we travelled with). All teams were of a mixed ability - with Mr Walker carrying Team Modling through and Mr Tubb letting too many goals in for AUEA!! The Chingford lads did exceptionally well, especially only being in Year 10 and mostly playing against Year 13 students- they only lost their games by 1 goal each time.

The final winners were Team Modling - even after Mr Walker pulling a calf muscle in the second game! ... Sir, you really should warm up at your age!!!

Day 1 on the slopes

Now we have found fast enough Internet, I can update the blog!

Our first day saw everyone feeling a mixture of emotions, from being eager, nervous to some feeling sick! Students were split into 3 ability groups: beginner, intermediate and advanced, and then they went with their instructor and member of staff for their first day skiing.

Student reflections of the day:

Advanced (Henry Brookes)

I enjoyed it because we were pushed beyond our comfort zones going down icey red runs and off piste. We were also taught to turn better and we did jumps. 

Intermediates (Muz Shaikh) 

Ranging from intermediates to just capable skiers, we had the whole lot in our group. Despite this, we still all attempted the harder blue runs, even if it meant rolling half way down! The focus of today's session was perfecting the parallel turning.

Beginners 

Today we learnt how to snow plough- for some of us we had to learn how to walk in our ski boots first!! We can also parallel walk up the nursery slope. 

Less than a week to go.... :)

The ski hoodies are in which means only one thing....less than a week to go! Don't forget to wear them on Friday morning.

Also, well done to Jenny Jones - GB's first medal in the Winter Olympics.
